SUPER DEMOCRACY - The Senate of Things

Three cultural institutions enter into a dialogue with the Belgian Senate during the exhibition SUPERDEMOCRACY, which is on display throughout October. BPS22 in Charleroi, BOZAR in Brussels and M HKA in Antwerp provide a cultural dimension to the Senate’s current issues.

In 2007, Pascale Marthine Tayou made 7 flags showing on the one side the European Union and on the other the African Union. The flags were displayed on 7 'towers or locations' in the plat pays for the double exhibition Commitment. One of these flags was installed on the roof of the M HKA. The other six were displayed at the basilica of Koekelberg, on the Saint Rombouts Tower in Mechelen, the Grimbergen Abbey, the SMAK in Ghent, at the MAC's museum in Grand Hornu and at the Cultural Centre of Strombeek. Involvement in the context of making and exhibiting art is essential for Tayou. Here the artist confronted the public with art in a public setting. You couldn’t miss these flags. Tayou thus opposed the African culture and experience with European culture and Western society.
