Jef Geys
In 1998 Jef Geys publishes a volume with the prosaic, self-explanatory title - All the black-and-white photographs up to 1998: a weighty tome of some 500 pages, filled with contact prints of all the photographs made by the artist over the last forty years. This important book offers a panoramic survey of the artist as remorseless observer and chronicler of his (own) history.
In 2002, Jef Geys was one of four Belgian artists chosen for Documenta 11 curated by Okwui Enwezor. There he presented his piece Dag en Nacht en Dag en… / Day and Night and Day and…, a 36-hour film in black-and-white wherein an endless series of photographs made by the artist from All the black-and-white photographs up to 1998 are edited together, and yield a hypnotically slow procession. Jef Geys is one of Belgium's most radical and influential artists. For decades now, his work has enjoyed international attention.
