Narcisse Tordoir
The two photographs from the series Unos a Otros are the portraits of Narcisse Tordoir and his son, and were originally made in preparation for the eponymous painting based on the etching Uno a Otros from Goya's series Los Caprichos. In this aquatint etching, Goya depicts a scene where men hold lances like picadors, in balance and threatening at the same time.
“The way of the world. The people laugh and play bullfighting with each other. He who yesterday played the bull plays today the toreador. Chance rules the game and assigns the parts according to her caprices.” – Goya
The preparatory phase of Tordoir's re-working is put to the test in all its possibilities: in collages, live impersonations, photo sessions and performances with friends. This re-discovery of Goya's Caprichos may be considered under the heading performance/actions.
